the story
The year is 2244 AD. The continuously expanding universe is on the brink of the most devastating war ever. The global clash cannot be avoided; the bloody reckoning has already started on some planets. After the long, peaceful years of economic boom, the Earth - Mars Empire was torn apart by the conflict between humans and cyborgs. However, in the war that is scorching the formerly collaborative worlds, they are not the only ones opposing each other. From the galaxy’s billions of nations, 4 factions ascended for the 23rd century: The Terran Empire, which wants to restore the unified galaxy ruled by humans; The Cyberian Collective, which is preparing for the final reckoning against humans; The Union of Trade Worlds, 
which wants to maintain its independence, and the outlaw Interstellar Nomads, dream on the dawn of freedom. The war has already begun, and the armies 
are standing in line. Everyone is looking for allies, blackmailing vassals, hiring mercenaries.

“How is it now?”

 

“It’s red!”

 

Aknila is a commercial specialty. It can show any color of the spectrum, depending on the temperature of the glass and the hand holding it. Its beautiful, but artificial colors glimmer with the impression of life among the gray walls of smoky pubs - for those, of course, who are able to detect colors. Its flavor and spirit tastes like the famous Terran whisky, after which it was modeled. Apart from the color upgrade, there was another factor that differentiated it from the latter drink: the remembrance of whisky was only contained in the memory old machines. One of the many legends that lied about the perfection of the glorious past.

 

“And how is it now?”

 

“Librarian, you drank enough. You should go home,” the bartender looked upon him from under his thick eyebrows. Honor and pity collided in his tired eyes as he looked on the old man, but his attention was occupied with checking the stock of goods. He, too feared the augment of war, which showed its effect with tapped shipments.

 

 “And now? Is it still red?”

 

He just murmured random colors uninterestedly, his thoughts were wandering somewhere else. The old man gazed the drink in his glass with misty eyes. He watched the liquid and its surface. Whatever angle he tilted the glass, the liquid stayed straight horizontal. This wasn’t a new scientific discovery, but he thought that sometimes the small, but accurate and necessary details created by nature can be staggering, especially for a man who spent such a bulk of hours to understand sciences. He watched the drink’s surface, as he could not see its vivid color. His mechanical eyes were programmed by machines with an algorithm that allowed him to detect colors only on screens, and only when it was necessary. Those colors out in the natural world that hold no meaning are redundant, their scanning just wastes battery.

 

The air of the pub was heavy with alcohol and tobacco smoke, which was because of the underground placing of the windowless tavern, not because of the huge crowd. There was no crowd, hardly any guests at all. That was the exact reason why the librarian liked this place. He got used to the smoke, the smells, but he wouldn’t trade silence for any price. The university libraries, the sound-proof research labs, and this small pub... there was one thing in common between them: one could be preoccupied with their thoughts in them, protected from the noise of overcrowded streets, capitalist factories, loud and flashing commercials, the people of the one-size-fits-all districts.

 

“Where did we go wrong?

 

“Pardon?” snapped the busy bartender in attention. There was something wrong with the stock...

 

“Where did we go wrong, John?” The librarian was gazing the perfectly smooth surface of his glass for a couple of seconds, then he slammed the precious drink and pushed the glass in front of the bartender, marking his need for refill. “Where did we go wrong?”

 

 

“We went wrong, Sir, just when Mr. Ford bounded the workers to the conveyors.” He tried to thaw the librarian’s cold mood with a gentle smile. “But it was about a thousand years ago.”

 

“Five hundred seventy-four years ago... don’t fool with me, John!” grunted the old man like an instructor. “However, what you said is not so nonsense. But if we go this far back in time, then we should consider the NASA MMJ program in 2032 as the beginning of today’s galactic wars.”

 

“When the Terran people constructed research labs on the Moon of Earth, on Mars, and the moons of Jupiter? Even I learned about it in History class. Mars was a good choice. They say that many fine mines were opened later. Martians can thank these mines for their richness and that they are a separate party in the war now... the filthy junk!” He filled his guest’s glass with an angry motion, then his own, too. “Let’s drink to the rust! May it devour them!”

 

“Oh, come on, John! The Cyberians are also a kind of people. The trefon and tallium mines of Mars were life-threatening. The Martian settlement enterprises were forced to replace their workers’ body parts with robotic devices in order to run their mines with maximum profit. These hybrids made Mars rich, resistant, but inhuman and over-mechanized. I myself cannot count, John, how many percent of me is machine and how much humanity is still left...”

 

Long silence came, as a new customer approached the bar and left for a dark corner with a pint. The bartender did not insist to continue the conversation, as it was difficult for him to talk about the initiating reasons of the war lying on their shoulders, even though he always loved to listen to the librarian. He honored the old man and his knowledge, and when he argued with someone else, he liked to listen to the delicately selected fragments of his wisdom with half an ear. The “great men’s toy” augmented from the unimportant guests of the pub as a rough diamond. But only a few people knew it. Those who looked at him saw only a tired, seemingly timid old man who tries to drown himself in alcoholic delirium -- but the fate of thousands depended on his council. John was sometimes wondering about how old he could have been, and how long ago he had died if he hadn’t been kept alive artificially for his knowledge and his aging organs hadn’t been replaced from time to time. Sometimes he felt that the elderly man was a mind reader, when he asked a question out of the blue which he was wondering about right then.

 

“How old are you, John?” he frowned his forehead below which one his mechanical gray eyes was analyzing the stubbles of a white haired, middle aged man standing behind the bar.

 

“Fifty-six, Sir. Why asking?”

 

“You are quite young. You haven’t even born at the time when the companies hiding behind the Martian people’s mechanized strength declared the establishment of the new federation named the Cyberian Collective, and stating that they reject paying taxes and keeping the laws, and that they would even wage war against their own mother planet, the Earth. Eventually, it was not them but Earth that stroke first, of course.”

 

“Filthy junks!” That was the statement after which the bartender always filled a glass for the guest and himself. He considered himself a supporter of the Luddite Movement, though deep in his heart, he understood the decision of the Cyberian that they even assumed a war to reject the dominance of Earth. Even he would have done the same. Moreover, he didn’t like the Terran Empire too much, either. “And filthy Terrans! Librarian, to which people you were born?”

 

“I myself belonged to many people throughout my lifetime, John. I believed in many things, I dreamed a lot. But your people is no different, either...” he grunted, then he took a deep breath. Whether it was because of the alcohol or the pain of remembrance is not known. “I know that you stand on a third side, and your people is also taking part in the war, just like Earth and Mars... What color is the Aknila right now?”

 

“I just refilled it, so it is still acid-green.” Then he turned around, marking his resentment and that he doesn’t want to continue the conversation. Deep inside, he was thinking about what would a Cyberian cyborg bartender or a Terran innkeeper have done in his place. Everyone had their own seemingly sacred reason to wage war, which was driven by conceit, pride and interest.

 

They differed... and yet they were similar.

The thing the Librarian liked the most in this quiet pub was that the second counter clock in his head was ticking slower there. His cybernetic heart didn’t need any sleep for fifteen years by then, but his human brain did. It felt relieving to have a drink after the daily 16-20 working hours. No matter how hard he tried to become an alcoholic, he couldn’t, because his rustproof stomach degraded alcohol before it could affect him. The glass turned into a placebo in his hands, the placebo of oblivion. But it hardly worked.

 

Cool, fresh air disturbed the soothingly swaying tobacco smoke. A stranger in a hood entered the pub. He was closing to the bar with determined, but calm steps.

 

“May I?”

 

“Be my guest!”

 

“Bartender! Refill the old man’s glass! And give me a double of it. I hope you are drinking something strong, old man.”

 

The bartender moved bored. He knew the heckler guy. He knew that he is a war struck soldier, currently the leader of one of the best mercenary squads. His will is strong, his tongue is lashing, but his aggression was overthrown by his respect towards the old man. He filled and let the Librariananswer.

 

“Aknila. I like its color.”

 

“You can’t even see any colors!” laughed the other one so hard that his hood slipped back on his nape. One of his eyes was lost in the war. His face was decorated with cuts, bullet holes and scars of the battles.

 

“The leader of Snake squad didn’t just want a simple drink in a smoky pub, I suppose. Anytime we meet, you, dear Python, ask questions. Tell me!”

 

“You ain’t change much, Librarian,” Python smiled. He raised his cybernetic arm and grabbed his glass gently. His left was still flesh, his right one was already metal, but even he didn’t which one he spares less.  He loved combat, and loved to use his arms with force. Actually, he only grabbed two things with care: glasses and women. “Tell me about the formation!”

 

Even the little remaining time stopped in the pub. Hearing the word “formation” even the smoke fled, not to mention the bartender.

 

“Gentlemen! I don’t want any trouble! You should probably discuss it elsewhere.”

 

“No problem, John. If Mr. Python wants to hear about the formation, then I’ll tell him about it. You’ve already heard much rockier stuff here.”

 

 

John’s pub was an asylum for not only the Librarian, but for much information that made the bartender feel safe and being in mortal danger at the same time. Clan chiefs, leaders of religious groups, commanders of special forces, but even ministers, ambassadors visited his bar: strictly in hood, strictly sitting next to the Librarian.  Some of them were patrons already. This was the place of secret information being exchanged unfathomably.

 

And the Librarian? He was independent. He informed those he felt that they will make use of it, and gave pieces of such information he hoped that will help making peace. His wisdom was obscured by his naivety. The old man knew much, but not everything.

 

“The formation is an ancient religious thesis that if the warriors stand in the proper pattern compared to the constellation of the stars, they vanquish their enemies with the help of divine powers.”

 

“Spiritual garbage? Don’t fool with me, old man!”

 

“The truth is that the ancient texts don’t tell gibberish. If the battalions really march in the certain formation, they practically grow indestructible: protected from all directions, mobile to all directions, ready to attack in any direction.”

 

“A formation that can decide the outcome of the many years lasting war? Well, old man, if I didn’t know you, I would think that you are drunk.” Python slammed his double drink so quickly that he didn’t even break his loud laugh. He covered his uncertainty with his long laughter, because he didn’t whether if he could believe the old man or not. His thoughts were rampaging, pros and cons clashed between his rational and power hungry sides. Everything was so simple, yet so incredible and complex. He was just a steadfast soldier, not a genius who sees through the controversially looking chaos of religion and science. He knew that the old man spent not hours, but years or even decades with researching a formation that can end all wars and leads a nation to victory. He also knew that the old man is close to the truth: the truth that forces thousands of human bodies in the wide galaxy to revolve in orbit lifelessly.

 

“Don’t horse around with me, old man! If that is so simple, then why haven’t all four warlords come to you for the secret?”

 

The bartender pretended to be very busy while he was listening to the conversation. He knew the answer, and he knew what the Librarian will reply... again... from time to time...

 

“Phyton! If you would know it... You are neither the first who came to me nor the last. Many people asked me that question. Some of them asked with violence, some of them approached me with money. It doesn’t matter if I show you the formation. What is it good for you? Everyone knows it. They won’t allow your people to complete it before others would.  You can ask better questions than that!”

 

“How can I take out an Astralmech before it would be able to attack?”

 

“See? That’s the question of your type! It’s just properly petty! Everyone has their role in this war. The great leaders deal with the ancient scripts and the perfect victory formation, I deal information, and John fills our glasses, don’t you, John? And you, Python, should deal with the battles. The Astralmech’s defensive system has a weak spot, exactly the...”

 

John the bartender shut his ears like the otter underwater. He began to become similar to the Librarian: he started to know more that he should. The difference was that he was just a bartender, not a scientist, not a toy of the leaders. The two men, the strong and the smart kept talking for long. The old man was explaining, the soldier was trying to understand and memorize what he heard. It wasn’t noticed in the windowless pub, but the first rays of sunlight began to appear.

István Szauer is the first lieutenant of the company. 
By profession he's a teacher, and had his
finger in every pie during the creation
process of the game.
Gábor POZSGAY is the cabin boy of the team: assistant 
who is responsible for the hud elements. 
Travel addict and hopeless dreamer.
gergő darabont is the navigator on the board. Designer, inventor, always having ideas, creative specialist. UX / UI designer, game developer and active gamer.
Balázs lenhardt is the captain on the board. He rules the game company after having designed several succesful games. His profession is law and economy.
Gábor toldi is the aerospace engineer (designer) of the crew. His profession is history, aesthetic and economy. He is a film, sci-fi and board game enthusiast.
Gyula POZSGAY is the architect of the team, working as illustrator
and graphic designer. He has great experience
in natural and digital media too.
Balázs Gracza is liaison officer of the crew. Nomen est omen game enthusiast who loves playing as much as working on the games design.
